Newly crowned middleweight champion Sean Strickland and flyweight champion Joshua Van, received indefinite medical suspensions following the event in Newark, N.J., according to a list released Wednesday by the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board.
Strickland regained the UFC middleweight title with a split-decision victory over Khamzat Chimaev in the main event, while Van retained his flyweight championship with a fifth-round knockout win over Tatsuro Taira in the co-main event. All four fighters received medical suspensions following their bouts.
Strickland was handed an indefinite suspension pending orthopedist clearance on his left hand, along with a mandatory 45-day suspension and 30 days of no contact. “I definitely got banged up,” said Strickland after the fight, according to MMA Fighting.
Chimaev, who lost a close five-round decision to Strickland, received a 45-day suspension with 30 days of no contact. In the co-main event, Van was issued an indefinite suspension pending orthopedist clearance on his left hand, in addition to a 30-day suspension and 21 days of no contact.
Taira, who suffered a knockout defeat to Van, received an indefinite suspension pending clearance from a CT head scan. He was also suspended for 90 days with 60 days of no contact following the stoppage loss.
The suspensions mean none of the four fighters can return to competition until they satisfy the medical requirements outlined by the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board. Clearance timelines will depend on the results of the required medical evaluations and scans.
UFC 328 took place Saturday night in Newark and featured championship bouts at middleweight and flyweight. The New Jersey commission released the full list of medical suspensions on Wednesday following post-fight medical reviews.
