Islam Makhachev’s coach Javier Mendez believes Ian Garry should retain his position as the UFC’s No. 1-ranked welterweight contender following his performance against the champion at UFC 330 in Philadelphia.

Makhachev successfully defended his welterweight title with a decision victory over Garry, improving his professional record to 29-1 while handing the Irishman just the second defeat of his career. Garry pushed the champion throughout the contest, defending multiple takedown and submission attempts and remaining competitive across five rounds.

“Ian Garry came in to demonstrate how tough he was, how deserving he is of the No. 1 spot and he proved his point,” said Mendez, according to Submission Radio and as noted by Sherdog.

“He’s the No. 1 contender for a reason and he probably should stay No. 1 contender after this performance, in my opinion,” said Mendez, according to Submission Radio.

Attention will now turn to Makhachev’s next title defence, with the champion targeting Carlos Prates as his next opponent. Unbeaten contender Michael Morales, who weighed in as the backup for the UFC 330 title fight, is also in contention for a shot at the belt.

Garry, meanwhile, leaves UFC 330 with a 17-2 professional record after his first UFC title challenge.
