Ian Machado Garry has vowed to return stronger after falling short in his bid to claim the UFC welterweight title against Islam Makhachev in the main event of UFC 330.
Makhachev earned a unanimous decision over Garry to successfully defend his title and record his 17th consecutive UFC victory, surpassing Anderson Silva for the longest winning streak in the promotion’s history. The result handed Garry just the second defeat of his UFC career.
“Tonight wasn’t my night,” said Garry in a post on Instagram. “I feel great, I did great, Islam was just better than me tonight and that’s OK. I want everybody who loves me and supports me and wants to see me do better, I want you to know that I’m going to be back.”
“I’m not disheartened by this. I’m bulletproof in my mind,” said Garry. “I’m 28 years of age, I just fought maybe the greatest fighter we’ve ever seen in this sport and I pushed him to the f*cking wire and I’m so proud of myself and I’m so proud of my team and everything that we’ve done.”
Garry also congratulated Makhachev and his team before turning his attention towards his return to competition. “I’ll be back. There’s plenty of matchups in this sport, plenty of fun matchups that I’m excited for,” said Garry. “We’ll be back and we’ll be better than ever.”
The defeat leaves Garry with two losses in 12 UFC appearances after beginning his professional career with 15 consecutive victories. His first defeat came against Shavkat Rakhmonov, before the Irishman responded with decision wins over former welterweight champion Belal Muhammad and Carlos Prates to secure his title opportunity against Makhachev.
