Jake Paul says he is still recovering from the broken jaw he suffered in his knockout loss to Anthony Joshua and admitted his professional boxing future remains uncertain as he awaits further medical evaluations.
Paul, who lost to Joshua via sixth-round knockout on Dec. 19, revealed on The Ariel Helwani Show that he is undergoing additional scans to determine the extent of his recovery and whether he will be able to compete again. The fight came after a proposed bout with Gervonta Davis fell through, leading Paul to face the former heavyweight champion despite the size difference.
“I’m getting some new scans here in a couple of days of the jaw to get an update on the healing process. We’ll see what my doctors say,” Paul said. “I think I’ll be able to get a more accurate timeframe or, can I even fight again? That is definitely in the realm and possibilities of things.”
Paul said his condition has improved gradually but added that he still requires medical clearance before resuming sparring. “It does like feel a lot better as weeks go by and time goes by, but I definitely need to get cleared first to be able to spar,” Paul said, according to the show. “But I’m sort of staying in shape. I’m always in the gym pretty much regardless.”
The 29-year-old also acknowledged he has considered retirement depending on how his injuries heal. “Most definitely. I think it just depends on like how the bone heals,” Paul added. “And then also there’s like a tooth missing. I’m pretty sure I’m going to have to get an implanted tooth of some sort.”
Paul added that several people close to him, including his doctor, have advised against continuing his fighting career. “Definitely my doctor, Arman. He’s saying he doesn’t want me to,” Paul said. He said his fiancée has been supportive while also reminding him that he has other successful business ventures outside of boxing.
Despite the uncertainty, Paul said he does not believe his fighting career is over. “Yeah, those thoughts have definitely come up, but I’m not done,” he said. “I can just feel it in my spirit and my soul and my heart that I have more fights left and unfinished business in my mind.”
Paul holds a 12-2 professional boxing record since debuting in 2020. He built his profile with victories over former MMA fighters including Ben Askren, Tyron Woodley, Anderson Silva, Nate Diaz and Mike Perry, before later defeating Mike Tyson and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. prior to the Joshua bout.
