UFC welterweight title challenger Jack Della Maddalena isn’t allowing himself to be overawed ahead of what is undisputedly the biggest fight of his life.

On Saturday night in Montreal, the 28-year-old Australian will challenge Belal Muhammad for the UFC welterweight title — a situation which has come about due to his 17-fight winning streak dating back to 2016. None of those fights, though, came with quite the same magnitude as this one.

And while he is acutely aware of what is at stake, this is a fight like any other as far as he is concerned.

“Obviously, this is the big one,” he told The Mac Life and other reporters in Montreal on Wednesday. “I’ve been working this for a long time. But yeah, it’s just another fight. It’s a five-rounder. I was prepping for a five-rounder. Now I’m fighting the best guy in a five-rounder. I put all the work in. It’s the toughest fight of my life.”

Muhammad, the champion since defeating Leon Edwards last summer, has pledged in the media to knock out Della Maddalena as part of what he says is a highly improved stand-up game.

But Della Maddalena, who has finished 12 of his 17 wins by KO or TKO, doesn’t quite see the evidence for this lofty claim.

“I don’t really see the resemblance in the ‘Canelo hands,'” he said, referencing claims linking Muhammad to the legendary boxer.

“He does have good hands. But if you’re talking skill-wise, I don’t see the resemblance. Maybe I’m missing something. Obviously, he’s proven he’s the best at the moment. He’s won the belt. Yeah, but I think he’s good at mixing it up. His boxing is all right.”
