Saturday’s co-main event in Shanghai, China has had a last minute change.

The bout, between former bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling and ex-featherweight world title contender Brian Ortega will now take place in the lightweight division after UFC officials confirmed that they had opted to change the weight under which the fight would be contested.

No formal reason was given for the late change, though it follows suggestions from China that Ortega may have been struggling with his weight cut to the featherweight non-title limit of 146-pounds.

Both men stepped on the scales at Friday’s early weigh-ins where they registered an official weight of 153-pounds.

The bout appears to be a pivotal one for both, with Ortega having been defeated in four of his past six contests, including a unanimous decision loss to Diego Lopes in his last performance in the cage back in September of last year. It should be noted that one of those defeats was a due to a shoulder injury sustained against Chan Sung-Jung in a fight that was Ortega would later avenge.

Sterling, meanwhile, will also make his lightweight debut after two fights at featherweight following his decision to move up from 135-pounds. In his debut at 145 he scored a comprehensive win over Calvin Kattar but would then drop a competitive decision to the undefeated Movsar Evloev.
