Their rivalry is long over but Daniel Cormier still can’t resist a dig as his old foe Jon Jones.

In what was one of the most heated feuds in UFC history, Cormier and Jones met on two occasions at light heavyweight in the cage – with Jones winning both, though their second was changed to a no-contest due to post-fight drug testing irregularities from Jones.

Now the UFC’s heavyweight champion (a title that was also previously held by Cormier, incidentally), Jones said in an online fan Q&A this week that had he met ‘DC’ at heavyweight he would have won in even more emphatic fashion than he did at 205-pounds.

And referencing the issue on ESPN, as noted by MMA Fighting, Cormier pushed back at his rival’s comments.

“Jon Jones, when I was actively fighting said, ‘I would not fight Daniel at heavyweight because it gives him an advantage. That’s where he’s best at,’” Cormier said. “I’m 46 years old, I am retired, I swing a golf club in my free time. He’s out of his mind.”

In an interview with TNT Sports (known then as BT Sports), Jones said in 2019 said that his “greatest chance of losing” would be to an athlete like Daniel Cormier, adding that he would be unwilling to give him a weight advantage at heavyweight.

“Right now I make light heavyweight very easily and it just wouldn’t make no sense to fight a guy who I think technically [is] on your level, and to give him a size advantage, I’m not doing it. I’m not doing it.

“I’m sure my fans don’t like to hear me talk like that, but that’s just me being a realist and being respectful to Daniel’s abilities.”

Jones, meanwhile, has come under fire more recently for an apparent lack of interest in defending his heavyweight crown against the interim champion Tom Aspinall – suggesting that he would instead be more interested in taking on so-called ‘legacy fights’ against non-champions.
