Ian Machado Garry says he remains confident he can defeat Islam Makhachev despite suffering a decision loss to the UFC welterweight champion at UFC 330 in August.
Machado Garry fell short against Makhachev in a competitive contest and later faced criticism from UFC CEO Dana White over his approach to the fight. Speaking ahead of Katie Taylor’s final bout at Croke Park in Ireland, the Irishman said he remained proud of his performance and preparation despite being disappointed with the result.
“Proud, happy, proud of me and my team, my preparation, everything we did,” said Machado Garry, according to DAZN and as noted by MMA Fighting. “Obviously, annoyed by the result, that’s the fight game. We get back on the horse, we go again. Because I’ve got 10 years in this sport to be at the highest level, fight the baddest men in the world, beat them, and prove that I’m one of the baddest men walking the planet.”
Machado Garry acknowledged that he could have produced more offence against Makhachev but said the champion’s record made finding openings difficult. “I definitely think the biggest thing I could’ve done was a bit more volume,” said Machado Garry. “A bit more me, a bit more kicks, more venom in the shots to the head. But at the end of the day, when you’re stood in front of a man who has been able to beat everyone he’s stood in front of, it’s difficult to maneuver that. But I feel like if I fight him right now, I beat him.”
The 28-year-old is now looking to return to competition quickly as he attempts to remain in the welterweight title picture. “I have so much confidence in myself, so much confidence in my team and the preparation that we do,” said Machado Garry. “I just want to get back in there tomorrow and do it all over again.”
Machado Garry said he has no preference over his next opponent and is prepared to accept another fight as soon as possible. “As soon as physically possible,” said Machado Garry. “Anyone, anywhere, anytime, go back in there, prove I’m one of the baddest men on the planet. Don’t stop.”
