Former UFC middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis says he has been repeatedly reviewing footage of his title loss to Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 319 last August as he works to correct mistakes and prepare for his return.

Du Plessis, who surrendered the 185-pound belt in the defeat, revealed during an appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show that he has been studying the bout regularly as part of his preparation moving forward.

“That’s of course, I watched the fight a lot actually, and making sure that those same mistakes don’t happen again,” Du Plessis said, according to Fighters Only. “Maybe like, twice a week. Really? Yes, of course. Yeah. That’s how I study fights.”

The South African fighter said he initially took time before revisiting the defeat, but has since made reviewing the bout a routine part of his training and analysis.

“I would say it took me around three weeks after the fight, before I actually watched it again, and then since then, I’ve watched it quite often to make sure that, you know, it’s part of my training,” the South African said. “It’s watching my fights and knowing what I did wrong and seeing the mistakes.”

Du Plessis also described a detailed process when studying the fight, sometimes reviewing it during cardio sessions and other times taking notes to break down the action more carefully.

“When I’m doing it more technically, I’ll have a pen and paper and I’ll write down exactly what I see,” Du Plessis explained. “Yes, the devil is in the details. Things happen so quickly and then you see the mistakes you make, especially at this level. It’s not massive mistakes. It’s always your one foot was too far away. Your balance wasn’t there. And that’s the kind of stuff we need to work on in training.”

Du Plessis added that correcting those small technical errors will be central to his effort to regain championship form following the loss.

“Those small mistakes, as you fix them, they make big mistakes.”
