Dana White has responded to speculation that Canelo Alvarez could earn $100 million for his upcoming bout with Terence Crawford, comparing the scale of the fight to the kind of paydays commanded by UFC superstars like Conor McGregor.
Speaking on Vegas PBS, White said that combat sports has always reserved massive paydays for its biggest names.
“Well, there’s a handful of guys that always make that kind of money. When you look at the UFC, the money is spread across the entire group of guys, you eat what you kill,” White said.
He pointed to McGregor and Ronda Rousey as examples of fighters who had proven their ability to draw blockbuster numbers.
“If you are a huge star like Conor McGregor or Ronda Rousey, many people have proven that they could sell PPVs, and you eat what you kill here. We also have guys that would be considered ‘journeymen’ in boxing that make millions of dollars. The whole fighter pay thing is completely not true.”
Turning back to the weekend’s event, White noted there was little doubt about the magnitude of Alvarez and Crawford’s purses.
“Obviously I’m doing this Canelo vs Crawford fight and I don’t think anyone is questioning what these two are gonna get paid,” he said, before being pressed on just how much.
“Well imagine how much it would take to get Canelo to fight Crawford and have a guy move up weight classes when he’s undefeated. Probably ($100 million),” White answered.
Canelo Alvarez faces Terence Crawford this Saturday at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, in a fight widely regarded as one of the most significant boxing events in recent years.
