Tickets for Katie Taylor’s final professional fight at Croke Park sold out within 30 minutes of going on sale on Friday morning, with demand exhausting the venue’s capacity of more than 80,000.

Taylor is scheduled to face Flora Pili at the Dublin stadium on September 5 in what is expected to be the final bout of her career. The event marks a historic occasion for Irish boxing and gives Taylor the opportunity to become an undisputed world champion for a third time.

More than 40,000 tickets had already been purchased during a series of pre-sales earlier in the week, according to promoter Eddie Hearn. Promoter Peter Aiken said the scale of demand had exceeded expectations. “This is going to be one of the biggest things I have ever been involved in,” said Aiken, according to the Irish Independent.

Aiken also compared interest in the event to one of the biggest ticketed attractions ever staged in Ireland. “I think this is going to be at Garth Brooks level – and that is saying something about the demand for tickets,” said Aiken.

Taylor, 39, currently holds the International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Organisation titles, while Pili holds the International Boxing Organisation belt. The bout will provide Taylor with an opportunity to add another world championship to her résumé in front of a home crowd.

The fight will be the first boxing event staged at Croke Park since Muhammad Ali’s victory over Al ‘Blue’ Lewis in 1972.
