Jake Paul poses a real risk to Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis ion their upcoming exhibition bout, according to former world champion Carl Froch.
The Briton, 47, who has been retired from the ring for more than a decade, has been a noted critic of Paul’s ascent from YouTube through the professional boxing ranks — but even amid this stance, Froch says that the sheer weight differential between Paul and ‘Tank’ could be hazardous to Davis’ health when they collide in the ring on November 14 in Las Vegas.
The bout, an exhibition, won’t be listed on either pugilist’s professional record but amid the apparent difference in skill between the 5ft 5in Davis and the 6ft 1in, Froch has suggested that Davis may have bitten off more than he can chew.
“It’s seven weight divisions, it would not be allowed. This is why it’s an exhibition,” Froch said on his YouTube channel, as noted by talkSPORT.
“It would not be licensed in anyone’s real world of boxing. No one would sanction it because it’s dangerous.
“Is there a chance that Jake Paul could clip Gervonta Davis, hurt him and knock him out? Probably not, but if he did land a big right hand swing, shoot from the hip and connect on Davis’s chin, there’s a chance that Davis could be seriously injured by somebody that’s five stone heavier.”
He added: “[Tank] won’t be used to being hit like that.”
It remains to be seen exactly what the weight difference will be on fight night but Paul most recently competed at the cruiserweight limit of 200-pounds, while Davis fights at 135-pounds. It is likely that he will be heavier for the upcoming exhibition bout.
Davis’ reach is listed at 67.5 inches, while Paul is reported to have a 76 inch reach — translated to a near foot-long advantage for the social media star.
In Davis’ last bout, he was held winless for the first time in his career as he and Lamont Roach Jr fought out a majority draw after 12 rounds back in March.
Paul, meanwhile, defeated the former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in late June. Chavez Jr. was deported to Mexico five days after the bout amid alleged links to organised crime in his home country.
