Fedor Emelianenko has expressed an interest in facing Francis Ngannou in a boxing match, although the former heavyweight champion has stressed that no negotiations have taken place.
The 50-year-old Russian, widely regarded as one of the greatest heavyweights in mixed martial arts history, retired from MMA in 2023 following his defeat to Ryan Bader at Bellator 290. However, Emelianenko has suggested that he would consider a return to competition under boxing rules, citing the injuries accumulated throughout his career.
“If we’re talking about being a downright dream, I’d be interested in fighting Francis Ngannou under boxing rules,” Emelianenko told Ushatayka, via MMA Mania.
“I couldn’t manage MMA now because I have too many injuries, but I’d have a go at him in boxing. That’s just me thinking out loud. I never said we were in negotiations.”
Emelianenko enjoyed a lengthy reign as PRIDE heavyweight champion and established himself as one of the sport’s most successful fighters during the 2000s. He later competed in Bellator, where he finished his career with four victories in his final seven appearances.
Ngannou, meanwhile, has already made the transition into professional boxing, losing decisions to Tyson Fury and subsequently suffering a knockout defeat to Anthony Joshua. The former UFC heavyweight champion has since returned to mixed martial arts, most recently recording a first-round stoppage victory over Phillipe Lins at MVP MMA 1.
The Cameroonian’s next move remains uncertain, although his association with Most Valuable Promotions could potentially provide opportunities for further appearances in boxing.
For now, Emelianenko’s interest represents little more than a prospective matchup, with neither fighter having confirmed discussions over a possible contest.
