Former heavyweight champion David Haye has issued a stark warning over a potential bout between Jake Paul and Anthony Joshua, suggesting the matchup could be life-threatening for the YouTuber-turned-boxer.
The comments come as discussions continue around a high-profile event scheduled for December 19 in Miami, where Paul is expected to face the former unified heavyweight champion. The proposed contest has drawn widespread scrutiny due to the significant gap in experience, size and proven world-class ability.
“If Jake Paul is left with Anthony Joshua unloading on him, it could be the end for him, literally. It could be his last day on earth,” said Haye, according to Sky Sports.
Haye added that the fight “shouldn’t” happen under the current terms, cautioning that even with paramedics on standby, the risks remain considerable. He noted that Joshua’s punching power and finishing ability present a danger far beyond anything Paul has previously encountered.
If the bout proceeds as planned, an eight-round format with regulation gloves has been agreed, pending final approval from the athletic commission. Paul’s team is yet to publicly respond to Haye’s warning, and attention now turns to whether any conditions or safeguards will be added before contracts are finalised.
Paul, who turned professional in 2020, has built his record against largely non-elite opposition, while Joshua is a former Olympic gold medallist and two-time heavyweight world champion. The disparity in pedigree has prompted ongoing concern from analysts and ex-fighters over the competitive viability — and safety — of the matchup.
